Back then, he and Dongyoung hyung lived in harmony. Dongyoung didn't mind Mark's mess--not the way Donghyuck did at that point when everything Mark did was starting to irk him, even innocuous things, little differences in their habits they used to laugh over. Nowadays, Mark doesn't know if he could still live comfortably with Dongyoung, who has over time started to pay closer attention to the aesthetics of his living space as a way to maintain an uplifting mindset/lifestyle, preferring more to have agency over his living space (his favorite place on the planet).
Mark couldn't keep up. Mark wants to be able to come home and strip naked on the spot and drop his clothes all over the floor. Maybe when he's Dongyoung and Taeyong hyung's age, he'll have reached a point of caring about the delicacies of life, too. [[BACK->DONGHYUCK'S ROOM]]
Mark walks straight into the room and approaches Donghyuck's desk.
It's cluttered, though not messy. Taking up the majority of his desktop space are his monitor, his keyboard, his "real" keyboard, his mic with pop filter, and three unopened cans of Redbull "just in case". Underneath his table are his "kwiyomi slippers", along with his CPU, on top of which a hard cover, leather bound [[diary]] sits.
[[BACK->DONGHYUCK'S ROOM]] Mark makes his way into the room, wandering over to the corner where Johnny has his laptop set up on the floor beside his [[keyboard->Johnny's keyboard]].
Mark still doesn't understand why Donghyuck <i>insists</i> on having a whole table to himself, set up for his gaming, the same way he insisted on building his own processor. Even more baffling is why Johnny lets him.
Above Johnny's setup, Mark can feel a light breeze coming in from the [[window]].
[[BACK->DONGHYUCK'S ROOM]] Mark walks the few steps over to the pair of beds taking up the majority of space in the room.
Johnny's bed is smoothly made. Between their beds is a nightstand with a [[lamp]]. On Donghyuck's bed, true to his word, sits [[a pallid, wooden box->BOX 9]] about the size of a loaf of bread.

Mark rolls his eyes. Donghyuck must really have nothing to hide.

[[BACK->beds]] It's just a regular lamp.
[[BACK->beds]] Mark leans closer to the mirror, scrutinizing himself inside it.
He takes a deep breath. In through his nose, out through his mouth in the form of a sigh.
The young man who stares back at him is far from what Mark considers his own peak condition. Unwittingly, once in a while, the image of himself in the mirror morphs, reflecting minute changes in his eyes, in his expression, in the way his mouth is set. Mark assesses his present condition. It feels like his eyebags have gotten heavier. Feels like his skin is becoming coarser. His lips are bitten red and chapped. When work gets busy, some things just naturally come to be given up. Sleep. Skin care. Chapstick. The desire to play, like Donghyuck wanted from him. Filtered out of him through osmosis, washed out instead by a sense of responsibility he's acquired, along with an unshakable quality more inherent to his nature.
It's not that he's run out of steam--it's just that with so many commitments, it's hard to do his best in all of them without burning out. Mark doesn't complain. It is not a problem. Sometimes, he's just a little tired, that's all.
He's turning his face around when he notices it--smudges of faint writing on the mirror. It looks at first like random smears of lines drawn with a finger. He squints.
He wonders if there is anything he can do to reveal the writing.

[[BACK->tydrawers]] (set: $phonePolaroid to true)It's no secret that Taeyong hyung collects polaroids above his mirror. There are two rows of these palm sized photos featuring Taeyong's friends and team members, some family, and some non-idol friends Mark has never met and can't distinguish. The photos themselves seem to span across quite a few years of their careers and lives, testifying to the history of this collection.
A personal and sentimental display, Taeyong hyung's way of keeping loved ones close. Mark thinks it must be similar to the way he himself keeps the supplements bottles from his mother in his bag, and the way he just never bothered to remove Jisung's gifted shoehorn from the Jansport backpack he carries with him everywhere.
Curiously, Mark notes that tacked onto the end of the two rows is a polaroid photo of something that looks like writing on paper.

[[BACK->tydrawers]]All around the coat rack hangs hats of different styles, and some of Taeyong's fanny packs.
Mark feels around the bags, comes up with nothing. He wonders how much belongings Taeyong hyung actually has, whether it's few like Mark has himself, so few that he can always carry the most important things in a small backpack or simply on his person.
Phone, wallet, passport, keys. These few items are transferred from one carrier to another every day to match Taeyong's daily fashion. Other than that, there is nothing superfluous to be found hiding in the bags on the rack. Everything else Taeyong might own seems to be out in the open, scattered on his table, drawer, and cupboard.
Frankly, Mark doesn't know what he needs and what he doesn't. But he's starting to get a sense of what he should be looking for.
Keys, boxes, clues. Something obviously constructed.
Donghyuck would think about him. Donghyuck wouldn't make it too hard on him.
[[BACK->tycorner]] Taeyong hyung's corner is abundant with plants, some hanging off the wall, some standing, with smaller ones stacked atop the pots of larger ones in the corner of his table.
Mark wonders if Donghyuck would hide things in the soil, but then decides that's probably going overboard, so he leaves the plants alone.
Donghyuck has been getting closer with Dongyoung hyung lately. Mark had once upon a time thought that both himself and Donghyuck were the type that's too irresponsible and unfettered to be tied down to raising plants, but Donghyuck seems to be changing his mind lately after Dongyoung enthused to him about low maintenance plants, like his rosemary.
The idea of Donghyuck raising and taking care of something alive, something precious...Mark finds it's not as hard to imagine as he would have thought. Nowadays, Donghyuck is more careful than he is reckless. Maybe Donghyuck is changing. Maybe they both are.
[[BACK->tycorner]] Taeyong hyung's mic. Although more often he's using the recording equipment at the studio, it simply feels wrong as an artist to not have one handy when inspiration strikes. Mark can understand. Sometimes, you just want to hear yourself execute something purely for the sake of self-satisfaction.

Mark feels a chill run up his spine. Something about this quote--though it feels distinctly like something Taeyong hyung would enjoy--feels uncanny. Mark can hear it echo, can feel its presence.
Something about the way it's angled, the way the words are arranged...
The quote goes like this:
(align: "=><=")[<div class="box">[(text-style: "outline")[“What matters most are the simple pleasures so abundant that we can all enjoy them...Happiness doesn’t lie in the objects we gather around us. To find it, all we need to do is open our eyes.”

"Really?" Mark whispers out loud to himself. "<i>Really</i>?"
He thinks he's had enough of Lee Donghyuck. Once this is over, he's going to complain to him for so long. If he didn't get lucky, how was he ever going to find this clue? Not to mention he doesn't even know which step of this elaborate puzzle it's for. Not to mention he doesn't even know what's awaiting him in his present box, doesn't even know if it's something he would want. And now he's working his butt off for it. Mark shakes his head. He would be more exhausted if this wasn't almost...kind of fun.
A scavenger hunt. Something he used to play in elementary school. Mark still remembers the Halloween scavenger hunt of grade 7, set up by his homeroom teacher. Good times. These things take brains and a lot of planning to execute well, and he has to give it to Donghyuck, he's done a good job. He's got Mark going in circles.
Mark had no idea Donghyuck had the patience and commitment to make a game like this.
